Protection of Critical Source Areas for Achieving Long-term Sustainability of Water Resources, Rockaway Creek Watershed, Hunterdon County, NJ

variable source area

  • Project Partners:

    New Jersey Institute of Technology
North Jersey Resource Conservation & Development Council
    New Jersey Water Supply Authority
    Municipal Land Use Center

This project was based on a watershed hydrology concept called variable source area hydrology, which applies a model to describe how runoff is generated from various areas of the landscape. Certain areas contribute more to runoff than others, these areas are known as hydrologically sensitive areas (HSA). When these areas are overlaid with potential pollutant sources, such as various land uses, areas that generate larger pollutant loads (critical source areas) can be targeted for protection or mitigation.

The project team worked with Clinton Township, Readington Township and Tewksbury Township to review their land use controls, such as zoning and ordinances, and to identify areas where CSAs were not protected. Recommendations and mapping were provided to each municipality.
