American Water Sponsors Raritan Watershed Clean-Up

Company’s Applied Water Management Group Committed to Cleaning Up Community

The Applied Water Management Group of American Water held a Raritan Watershed Clean-Up on Saturday, September 10, 2005.

As one of New Jersey’s top planning, engineering and construction firms, The Applied Water Management Group is actively involved in environmental maintenance.   “As water and wastewater professionals, we are especially concerned about preserving local water quality,” said Jens Riedel, P.E., senior project engineer of The Applied Water Management Group.  “We hope that our volunteer efforts will result in cleaner, healthier water for the entire community to enjoy.”

AWM volunteers put one of the company’s utility trucks to good use lifting tires from the river.

The clean-up took place at two locations in Hillsborough Township:  the South Branch of the Raritan River at Pleasant Run Road between Branchburg and Hillsborough Townships and the portion of Royce Brook near the dam in Van Middlesworth Park.  Both locations are in a portion of the watershed upstream from American Water’s Canal Road and Raritan-Millstone water treatment plants, which provide the water supply for a large portion of the Central New Jersey’s population.

The Applied Water Management Group’s seven volunteers removed eight bags of trash and debris including cans, bottles and plastic bags from the waterway and streambank.  Also removed from the water were eight tires and two heavy steel rings.

A post-clean-up barbeque for all participants was held at the headquarters of the Applied Water Management Group located in Hillsborough, NJ.  Overall, it was a very successful and enjoyable clean up and AWM expects to do more of these events in the future.
