Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association Seeks Environmental Scientist

The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association (SBMWA), a New Jersey non-profit environmental organization seeks a motivated Environmental Scientist to play an integral role in protecting water quality and the natural environmental through its Watershed Management Program. The qualified candidate will work with a group of highly motivated, good-humored professionals and will be responsible for managing the Watershed Assessment and Restoration Programs. 

Watershed Assessment

SBMWA has an ongoing study of the 265-square mile Millstone Watershed through characterization and assessment of smaller land areas to identify environmental problems, understand their causes, and select appropriate solutions to those problems.  The selected candidate will be responsible for data and land use analyses, coordination with review committee, technical writing, distribution and presentation of the characterization and assessment reports to decision makers and the public.

Restoration & Reforestation Programs

The individual will also manage the streambank restoration and reforestation program, which uses volunteer effort and bioengineering techniques to stabilize streambanks.  Primary responsibilities for managing the restoration program include site and plant selection, volunteer coordination, collaboration with municipal, county, and state officials, and post restoration monitoring.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree, with a graduate degree preferred, in aquatic ecology, biology, ecology, or environmental science, or equivalent life experience.

   Experience with streambank restoration and reforestation techniques, small-scale projects and native species selection.

   Ability to supervise and manage volunteers effectively.

   Previous experience in outreach and effective written and oral communication skills when communicating with a variety of audiences such as the general public, teachers, scientists, public officials and the press.

   Strong team player and comfortable working independently with minimal direction.

   Sense of humor.

SBMWA is a member-supported non-profit environmental organization located on an 830-acres nature reserve in Pennington, NJ. SBMWA’s mission is to enhance the quality of the natural environment in the 265-square mile region drained by Stony Brook and the Millstone River. SBMWA is committed to improving community awareness of environmental issues, protecting water quality and quantity, and supporting informed land use decision-making.
