EPA TARGETED WATERSHED GRANT FOR THE RARITAN BASIN

Stream Restoration Project Updates

Project Partners:  NJ Water Supply Authority, Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, South Branch Watershed Association, NJ Department of Environmental Protection

Through the EPA TW grant, NJWSA and SBMWA are conducting several stream restoration projects within the target area.  NJWSA’s Old Farm Road riparian buffer project was featured in the Summer 2005 Basin Bulletin.

During Summer/Fall 2006, NJWSA implemented two additional projects:

the Crystal Springs Project and the Hoffman Park Project.

CRYSTAL SPRINGS PROJECT

HOFFMAN PARK STREAM RESTORATION PROJECT

Natural Bottom Culvert

Stream Channel Open

Crystal Springs is a preserved property near the headwaters of the Spruce Run, one of the two main streams that feed Spruce Run Reservoir.  NJWSA staff replaced a pipe culvert under the park access road with a 3-sided, natural bottom box culvert.  This will improve water and sediment passage through the system, and will also improve fish habitat and passage.

Crystal Springs is at the border of Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County and Washington Township, Morris County.  The property was recently purchased by NJWSA and a consortium of municipal and nonprofit entities and will be preserved as open space and managed by Hunterdon County Parks and Recreation.  more...

The Hoffman Park project, on a branch of the Mulhockaway Creek, the other main stream that feeds Spruce Run Reservoir, is a very ambitious restoration project.  Approximately 700 feet of stream were restored to improve water and sediment passage through the system.  more...
