Chemical and Biological Action Teams Training

April 1, 2006; 9:30 am to 4:30 pm

31 Titus Mill Road; Pennington, NJ  08534

The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association is seeking volunteers for StreamWatch, its volunteer water quality monitoring program. The StreamWatch program consists of Chemical Action Teams (CATS), Biological Action Teams (BATS), and River Action Teams (RATS). Through these programs, volunteers collect data used to assess water quality and inform local decision makers about the health of local streams and the watershed. By participating in our StreamWatch program, you join an exciting opportunity that enables you to enjoy the outdoors, protect the environment, and add to our knowledge of local waterways.

Attend either the morning session (9:30 am to 1:00 pm) for training on the Chemical Actions Teams, the afternoon session (2:00 to 4:30 pm) for training on the Biological Action Teams, or both. Volunteers for the Chemical Actions Teams will receive training on how to perform chemical tests for pH, temperature, nitrate, phosphates, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. CAT volunteers must be able to sample every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday) between 10 am and 12 noon. Volunteers for the Biological Action Teams will receive training on how to perform sampling for benthic macroinvertebrates, and must be able to sample three times a year in March, July, and October.  BAT volunteers must be at least 14 years old to participate.

If you are interested in keeping an eye on the health of local streams, join our program!  Please contact Beth April at bapril@thewatershed.org or (609) 737-3735 for more information or to sign up for the training. Also, please visit our website at www.thewatershed.org for a list of open sites.
