GIS Specialist & Systems Administrator Position Available

The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association (SBMWA), a New Jersey non-profit environmental organization, seeks an enthusiastic, and well-organized individual to fill a full-time position to support a thriving mid sized watershed
association with GIS and web support while managing its computer systems
. The qualified candidate will work with a group of highly motivated, passionate, good-humored professionals.

GIS Support

SBMWA has an existing GIS Center that supports the Association’s Watershed Management programs focused on finding causes of and implementing solutions to impairments to clean water. The qualified candidate will be responsible for working with the director of watershed management and other staff to create GIS maps to support the Subwatershed Characterization & Assessments program and other watershed management programs that require GIS input.

Systems Administration

The selected candidate will be responsible for system/network administration for approximately 20 Windows 2000 workstations. Additional responsibilities include planning for future information systems needs of SBMWA given the current state of technology and available or prospective funding

Web Site Management

SBMWA maintains a Content Management System (CMS) website. The qualified candidate will be responsible for updating and maintaining existing web pages, and when necessary, designing new pages. The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintenance, configuration, and customization of ArcIMS (Internet Map Server) software for the GIS Center website.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field with a strong emphasis on GIS applications or equivalent life experience.

  • Ability to do basic research and specific research in GIS based environmental analysis.  

  • Understanding of how GIS integrates with other fields and what the applications are for those fields.

  • Background in mapping of environmental issues in New Jersey preferred.

  • Continuing activity in the GIS professional community & non profit experience, a plus

  • Ability to manage time and data efficiently.

  • Ability to pick up new technical skills quickly.

  • Troubleshooting software and hardware, installing and upgrading software.

  • Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Tk, Perl, VBScript, a shell)

  • Ability to effectively and tactfully advocate SBMWA’s positions.

  • Excellent communication skills - written, verbal, and graphic. Ability to understand and interpret technical information to a wide variety of audiences, both technical and non-technical.

  • Strong team player with a positive attitude and sense of humor, and comfortable working independently with minimal direction.

  • Technical Skills:

  • Skilled with ArcView/ArcInfo GIS software and extensions.

  • Knowledge of CMS based website management.

  • Experience in system/network admin for Windows 2000 workstations: configuring software, setting up systems, providing internet connectivity and system security. Knowledge of Unix system administration techniques a plus

  • Configuration and customization of ArcIMS (Internet Map Server) software

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and research solutions via freely available resources

  • Knowledge of network operations and protocols

  • Knowledge of backup technologies and procedures

  • Knowledge of viruses - how they operate, how to prevent infection, repair & recovery techniques after infection

  • Working knowledge of VBA, ArcObjects, Javascript, XML, and HTML, a plus

  • Knowledge of email systems, both internal mail systems (Lotus, MSMail, etc) and external (elist moderation), a plus

  • Technical and practical expertise with Global Positioning System, preferably Trimble, a plus

SBMWA is a member-supported non-profit environmental organization located on an 830-acres nature reserve in Pennington, NJ. SBMWA’s mission is to enhance the quality of the natural environment in the 265-square mile region drained by Stony Brook and the Millstone River.
