Bald
Eagle Writer To Speak At Watershed Association’s Annual Meeting The
Annual Meeting of the South Branch Watershed Association will take place
on Friday March 18 at Mangia Bene Restaurant on Route 202 in Raritan
Township. Bruce E. Beans, a noted local author, will present a talk on
the bald eagle at the meeting. Mr.
Beans is the author of Eagle's
Plume: The Struggle to Preserve the Life and Haunts of America's Bald
Eagle (Scribner, University of Nebraska Press) and co-editor of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife of New Jersey (Rutgers University
Press). The chief writer and editor for the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program, he
has closely watched the state’s bald eagle population increase
during the past two decades from just one to nearly 50 active nesting
pairs. His environmental journalism has appeared in The
New York Times, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Audubon magazine
and New Jersey Monthly. The
South Branch Watershed Association is a membership based non-profit
organization that advocates for water conservation and the preservation
of the natural resources of the South Branch Raritan River and its
watershed, a source of drinking water for more than one million Central
New Jersey residents and businesses.
The Association provides environmental education to elementary
and middle school age children and the general public.
Other programs include municipal land use planning assistance to
promote low impact development; biological sampling to monitor the
health of the South Branch Raritan River and its tributaries; research
and guidance on stormwater runoff and non-point source pollution issues;
well testing programs; and stream clean up and restoration projects. Click
