NRCS Watershed Assistance in Raritan Basin

Assessment and Planning

Communities in the Raritan Basin have utilized USDA-NRCS watershed assessment and planning assistance to help reduce flood damage, develop water-based recreation, improve water quality and wildlife habitat, promote groundwater recharge, and enhance agricultural resources. Watershed specialists work with engineers, soil scientists, wildlife biologists, geologists, economists, landscape architects, plant materials specialists, and GIS specialists, and others to assess and define problems; inventory, forecast and provide analysis; formulate, evaluate and compare alternatives; and, with the help of the locally-led sponsors, choose an alternative for implementation.

The Millstone River Watershed Flood Damage and Mitigation Report (potentially impacting Franklin, Hillsborough, Millstone, Montgomery, Princeton, Rocky Hill,

South Brunswick) and Flood Mitigation Plans to implement recommendations from that report for Franklin, Millstone, Montgomery, and Princeton can be downloaded from the NRCS New Jersey website.

Dam Rehabilitation Assessments

The Rehabilitation Amendment to the PL83-566 Program in 2000 authorized the assessment, planning and implementation of measures to rehabilitate or remove dams constructed under PL83-566 Program since 1954. Rehabilitation Assessments have been performed for several sites (dams) in the Stony Brook Watershed project.  These sites are:

Site 2: Willow Lake – Hopewell Township

Site 3: Rosedale – Hopewell Township

Site 7: Hunts Lake – Hopewell Township

Site 11A: Amwell Lake – West Amwell Township

Site 14: Honey Lake – Hopewell Township

No further assessments are authorized at this time.
