New Jersey Section AWRA Wins National Award

The New Jersey Section of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) received the Outstanding State Section Award from the American Water Resources Association at the President’s Reception held on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel, Baltimore, Maryland.   The State Section, which was founded in 1970, last received this award in 1985.  The Section competed with 26 State Sections for this honor.

President Paul Scally accepted the award on behalf of the Section from AWRA President David DeWalle.   Other members attending the event included Vice President John Miller and Treasurer Kathy Hale as well as Past Presidents Anthony McCracken, Ray Zabihach and Greg Westfall.

Membership over the last two years has grown from approximately 25 members to over 130 members.  President Scally noted that the Section has made significant changes including development of committees that include Stream Restoration, Groundwater and Flood Plain Management.  The Flood Plain Management Committee resulted in the birth of the New Jersey Association for Flood Plain Management, a chapter of the national Association of State Flood Plain Managers.

This year the Section hosted a highly successful Mid-Atlantic Conference on Stream Restoration which included excellent speakers and field trips attended by over 120 people.   Also, the Section hosted its second annual Water New Year’s Eve event which was an opportunity for Section members to hear national AWRA President David DeWalle and to network in a social atmosphere.

The Section’s newsletter known as the Aquaduct is provided on a quarterly basis and provides an opportunity for members to contribute articles on professional work, current events, committee events, member news and other activities.   The Section’s website has also been updated to reflect the changes.   In addition, this year the Section, along with Hatch Mott McDonald, continued its nearly 20 year tradition of supporting the prestigious Peter Homack Award by the nomination of Vernon A. Noble.
