New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program

Lower Raritan Watershed Management Area - Manalapan Brook

The New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program is a community-oriented AmeriCorps environmental program designed to raise awareness about watershed issues in New Jersey. Through this program, AmeriCorps members are placed in watershed management areas across the state to serve their local communities.

This year each of the twenty Americorps Watershed Ambassadors have been assigned to a sub watershed (HUC 14).  Each HUC 14 is located within a broader watershed management areas (WMAs). Over the next year each ambassador will perform TMDL Visual Assessments within their assigned HUC 14.  The sub watershed of focus this year in WMA 9 is the Manalapan Brook.  The Manalapan Brook runs through portions of Manalapan, Millstone, and Freehold Townships.

These assessments also assist the NJWSA and Princeton Hydro with the Manalapan Brook restoration plan.  As a result of the  assessments, contributions of pollutants to the watershed, the lake and its tributaries, can be identified and studied.  Several primary pollutants such as fecal coliform, phosphorus, and total suspended solids have been identified for these water bodies.  The results of the assessments can be used in the Manalapan Brook restoration project to improve the overall water quality conditions for Manalapan Lake.
